How often should a septic tank be pumped?

Most septic tanks need periodic pump-outs based on household size, tank capacity, wastewater load, system age and how heavily the property is used.

General pump-out timing

Many residential septic tanks are checked every few years, but the correct interval depends on the tank, occupancy, water use and whether solids are building up quickly.

Signs the interval may be too long

Slow drains, gurgling pipes, sewage smells, soggy ground near the system, high sludge levels and backups can mean the tank needs attention sooner.

Why inspections help

A septic inspection can confirm sludge and scum levels, tank condition, baffles, lids, access, drainage and whether pumping is due.
